A portrayal of the lives of Nichalos and Alexandra from the birth of their youngest child to the execution in the Russian revolution. It is an epic film at around 3 hours in length and depicts the intimate life of the imperial family contrasting their opulance and the poverty of many ordinary people. It also plays on the effect of the child's haemophilia and the impact on the family and consequently on the nation. There are good performances from Michael Jaysron and Janet Suzman in the lead roles and there is good support from Tom Baker as Rasputin. There is a strong supporting cast of British actors.
